Welcome to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Mendocino!

For over 35 years, BBBS has made a positive difference in the lives of Mendocino County youth. Working with caring volunteers, BBBS offers mentoring, skill building and after school programs for youth, at no charge. Teacher, parent and youth evaluations from throughout Mendocino County show that our programs create results for youth in our communities-results that make a real difference in children's lives, increasing the chances they will succeed in school, solve problems peacefully, and avoid drugs, gangs and other harmful activities.

Our mission:

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Mendocino County provides professionally supported 1:1 mentoring relationships and youth development activities for all Mendocino County youth who want or need them.

In 2008, 735 youth in Mendocino County participated in Big Brothers Big Sisters of Mendocino mentoring, after school programs, classroom education, and youth development services.

You can make a big difference for youth in Mendocino County.

There are many ways to help:

  • Become a Big Brother or Big Sister
  • Help organize a special activity for youth waiting to be matched with mentors
  • Make an automatic monthly donation with your Visa or Master card
  • Put together a team to gather pledge donations and bowl in our annual Bowl for Kids' Sake fundraiser

UPDATE: July 2009 Evaluation of Mentored Youth in Mendocino County

A recent study by an independent evaluator compared first and third trimester report cards of 54 Mendocino County students who participated in BBBS mentoring services in the 2009-2010 school year. The evaluation found:

  • 63% of mentored children showed improvement (or were already graded "excellent") in Reading, and
  • 59% showed improvement in Math, and
  • 70% showed improvement in Homework Completion.
Written evaluations completed for Littles by teachers and mentors assessed 55% of students as having improved academically and 55%-60% of mentors as having better attitudes toward school.
